Supervising Children’s Screen Time: Guide for Parents

Supervising Children’s Screen Time: Guide for Parents

Today’s technology, such as the television and mobile phones, is the go-to option of many busy parents who want to keep their children occupied. These instances are technically referred to as “screen time,” or the amount of time that a child spends in front of a TV, laptop, or phone screen.

Screen Time: Digging Deeper

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) sets some recommendations as to how long children should watch a video or tv show on-screen. The recommendations also vary depending on the child’s age. The AAP endorsed their recommendations because of the perceived negative effects of this practice when done excessively.

Supervising Screen Time: The Parent’s Role

As a Day Care Center in New York, we understand if parents find it challenging to supervise and regulate their children’s screen time. Children can be very persuasive when we always give in to them. Yet, as parents, you can exercise your authority and love at the same time to ensure that their screen time is for their best wellbeing.

Guidelines for Screen Time

We would like to share some guidelines in supervising your children’s screen time.

  • Be a Role Model
Children take their cue from their parents in every aspect of their lives. So if you want them to be responsible about browsing their mobile phones or watching TV, you should exhibit responsible screen-time for yourself too.
  • Learn About Electronics
Your knowledge helps you better protect your child from the dangers or risks of the shows or apps they are using. With the Internet, you should be able to find reliable resources online that can help you learn more about technology.
  • Set a No-Screen Zone
At home, your family should know that some areas are deemed “no-screen” zones. Establishing this regulation enables you to still provide a bonding opportunity with your children.
  • Designate Unplug Hours
Agree that in certain times, such as during meals, no one should be checking their mobile phones. These moments are important to give you quality time together in the midst of the busy days and technological attractions.
  • Discuss the Dangers of Excessive Screen Time
As a provider of Child Care in Bronx, New York, we always advocate for children’s safety and wellbeing at all times. If their screen times can contribute danger, then talk about this to your children in a way that they will understand.
  • Arrange Other Activities
Children can also benefit from actual play with other children. Too much screen time may result in being sedentary, which is not healthy for their bodies. When children are ready for Preschool, they can also engage in activities that keep them on the move.

At the end of the day, you will still get to decide what’s best for your children. Yet, we hope that the above guidelines have enlightened you in some way.
